Personal Statement
“Ladies and Gentlemen, I am proud to
introduce to you, the USC class of 2003!” With tears in my eyes,
I turned to look at my family. They all had so much pride in their faces; pride
that made the troubles we overcame to get me to this point in my life seem miniscule.
Not only was I the first person from my family to graduate from high school, but now I am an unprecedented, and unthought-of,
college graduate as well. I had continued my education as far as any of us had
ever dreamed, and my family is all very proud of me and my efforts to do so.
With degree in hand, I was fortunate to begin
an immediate career with the Kern County Waste Management Department. Although
I enjoy my job, I found that there was much more out there to be understood - business and administration in particular. My interest was piqued, and my desire to learn would not rest. I was introduced to the MSA program through a couple of fellow co-workers who had recently completed the
curriculum. The program and its contents seemed perfect to satisfy the questions
that I was encountering within my own professional endeavors. That was it, it
was decided: I was going to continue to pursue my education by enrolling in the CSUB MSA program.

My intentions of the MSA program were to
gain the knowledge that many of my superiors possess. Looking up to those people,
I hoped to be more like them. With the skills that I have gained from the MSA program, this is possible. I believe that the program has helped me to become more like the professionals that I deal with on a daily
basis, as well as has increased the possibility for me to advance my career farther than I had ever imagined. Already, I have noticed a remarkable improvement in my communication skills, both oral and written. Additionally, I have an increased understanding of project management and its components,
human resource management, the importance of contract language, as well as an appreciation for cost-benefit analysis and quantitative
decision making.
I have gained many great skills through the
curriculum of the MSA program that will help me in the professional realm. One
skill, however, that was acquired through the program but did not come from the curriculum is the new found confidence that
I have in myself and the work that I produce. While the curriculum helped to
develop the skills that generate high-quality work, the confidence came from within.
Taking on what seemed to be an impossible challenge, such as pursuing a Master’s degree and coming out in the
end shining, has helped me to realize that I can accomplish most anything with the right resources, frame of mind, and with
patience.
